Imaging the child with developmental delay

Development is a complex, continuous process of maturation that begins at conception and continues until maturity. Child development refers to maturation of brain function as distinct from growth. The sequence of development is the same for all children, but the rate of development will vary from child to child depending on genetic and environmental factors as well as coexistence of chronic medical disorders. Development can be divided into various domains, including gross and fine motor development, expressive and receptive language development, cognitive development and psychosocial development. Delay is said to exist when a child does not reach developmental milestones at the expected age, allowing for the wide variation amongst normal children.
Early recognition of developmental problems is important because it allows early referral for appropriate
diagnosis and intervention where possible. It is frequently not possible to identify the cause of developmental delay through medical and developmental history and physical examination alone. Additional diagnostic tests and procedures include cytogenetic analysis, metabolic screening, serology, electroencephalography (EEG) and neuroimaging studies. Neuroimaging studies provide important information about central nervous system structure and function, evidence of previous insult, and characteristic patterns or specific abnormalities that can categorise or identify certain disease processes. Abnormalities detected on neuroimaging studies may direct further investigation even if the diagnosis cannot be reached from imaging alone.
