We have now met our first objective – to define the term rights. We have also looked at the difference between wants and needs. Before we move on to the next section, we need to talk about something fundamental. What is a child?
Begin by telling the participants that : The CRC consider a person to be achild until the age of 18 unless, under national law, majority is attained earlier. Then ask them to refine this definition, if necessary, so that it is appropriate to the laws of their own country.
If appropriate, and if time permits, you can ask the participants if they think the laws of the country represent the best interests of the child.
